Contact Your Congressperson

A phone call is the best way to get your message to your congressperson. Even if you leave a voicemail, a phone call ensures that your voice is heard and the congressperson's staff tally your position on the issue.

We have a simple script prepared so you know exactly what to say to be the most effective.

Two easy steps!

  • 1. Look up your senators and representative(s).

  • 2. Call up and use our script to express your support.

Find Your Senators and Representative(s)

Start by going to https://www.commoncause.org/find-your-representative/addr/ and entering your address. Once done, a list of politicians will be displayed along with their phone numbers. Call each one who is listed as "U.S. Senator" or "U.S. Representative".

What to Say

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [ADDRESS].

I’m calling because it has been brought to my attention that many of our military veterans are being burdened by high levels of unpayable medical debt and for some, suicide is seen as the only way out. Those pressures will largely disappear if that debt is legitimately made available for forgiveness. Civilian hospitals are allowed to make such debt available for sale and then forgiveness and I believe that military debt held by the VA deserves that same legal accommodation.
